Wearing a hat provides instant shade, especially during these hot summer days. It’s so helpful when it comes to beating the heat that you might get tempted to use it every single day. The problem? The more often you use it, the more it’s bound to get stinky.

While an obvious solution is to wash your hat, it’s not always the best idea. Some hats are made of materials that can shrink or misshapen. But fear not! There are ways to keep your head gear smelling fresh and clean.

Baking soda + hydrogen peroxide

Baking soda isn’t just a great cleaning tool; it also does wonders in absorbing odors. Meanwhile, hydrogen peroxide is a good anti-microbial agent, which is necessary in your quest to defeating that funky hat odor. Bacteria, in case you still haven’t heard, is the primary cause of foul smell. Mix these two and coat the hat with the paste then let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes. Wipe the paste away with a damp cloth and it should be odor-free in no time.

Fruit peel power

Citrus is a natural deodorizer. Banish unplesant smells with the help of lemon, orange, or grapefruit peels. You can either place your hat in a zip lock bag filled with peels or leave the peels in your hat overnight.

The boozy way to keep odor away

Vodka works great in removing musty odors that won’t go away. Spritz a bit of vodka onto the hat and allow it to dry in a well-ventilated area. Trus, it’ll be scentless when it dries. It doesn’t matter if you use a cheap or expensive bottle—the results are just the same.

Throw your smelly hat in the freezer

Did you know that the freezing temperature can kill odor-causing bacteria? But before you tossing your hat in the icebox, seal it in a zip lock to make sure it won’t be catching the nasty stench of meat or food that's already in there. The next day, simply warm it up before wearing it again and looking, ehem, cool.

Leave it in the sun

Long exposure to fresh air and bright sunlight will thoroughly dry out the hat and kill almost anything living on it. Once you've given it a sniff and it has your seal of approval, wear that bad boy to protect your noggin' and look stylish while you're at it.
