In today's world, it's now acceptable for guys to get dermatological treatments. That includes the facial. It used to be that only your girlfriend got one from time to time. Nowadays, you've also legitimately wondered about it too—specifically whether getting one is worth your time and money. It's a confusing issue due to mixed feedback from different people. Some say it helps improve their apperance. However, others claim pricking made their condition worsen.
So we asked an expert. Dr. Tricia Pontejos, a dermatologist at Skin MD Medical and Cosmetic Dermatology, says: "[Facial] prevents blackheads and/or whiteheads from becoming inflamed pimples which are red and painful but if not done properly, it can cause more inflammation or unnecessary trauma to the skin and may create wounds that may leave scars."
Not all facials are safe, says Pontejos. If it isn't done properly, it can cause problems. "If instruments are not properly sterilized, it can transmit infections like hepatitis B. Also beware of allergies to facials masks and other products."
"It is still best to go to a board-certified dermatologist to make sure you are safe and getting the right treatment," she advises.
How often should someone come in for a facial to see good results actually depends on your skin type. "If you are acne-prone, once every two weeks should be okay, but again you need to be assessed by a board-certified dermatologist to determine if it is right for you. This will ensure skin issues are treated correctly. It's a case-to-case basis and unsurprisingly so—people have different skin types, each of which react differently to treatment."
So if facials aren't always advisable what can everyone do to hygienically maintain the skin's quality? Pontejos says, basic washing helps a lot. In order to fight off acne, wash your face daily using a mild soap especially if you get exposed to dust and pollution daily.
If your skin still breaks out even after applying this regimen, that's when you might actually need the deeper cleansing effect of facials.
