We're pretty sure you know someone who eats like there's no tomorrow, but doesn't even gain a quarter of a pound. We're also pretty sure that you've heard someone tell him this: "Suwerte mo naman, p're. Ang bilis ng metabolism mo kaya kahit ano kainin mo 'di ka nagiging dad-bod."

But did you know that that isn't exactly scientifically accurate? It isn't true that skinnier folks have a faster metabolism. In fact, it's the other way around, and skinnier folks actually have slower resting metabolisms, says Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, the medical director of the Bariatric Medical Institute, which provides non-surgical weight management. It's a myth, just like these five other old wives' tales about metabolism:


MYTH #1: EATING SIX SMALL MEALS A DAY, INSTEAD OF THREE BIG ONES, TO BOOST YOUR METABOLISM

Eating more frequently has no real benefits. A study conducted by The British Journal Nutrition shows that there's no difference between having six small meals or three bigger meals per day. As the researchers put it: "There is no evidence that weight loss on hypoenergetic regimens is altered by meal frequency." 


MYTH #2: EATING HEAVY WHEN IT'S LATE IS BAD

Your mom regularly tells you, "Hinay hinay sa pagkain, gabi na!" But actually there's no need to deprive yourself when you are really hungry at night. According to Nate Miyaki, author of the Intermittent Feast, as long as you eat healthy foods, your metabolism will be fine.

"Carbohydrates can help us recover from strenuous, anaerobic activity," she said. Just avoid the high-fat foods late at night because "they can cause us to fatten up during periods of inactivity."



MYTH #3: YOU CAN KICKSTART YOUR METABOLISM WITH BREAKFAST

According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, eating breakfast won't actually give your metabolism a jumpstart. However, they noted the importance of eating food rich in "fiber and micronutrients" for breakfast mainly to keep your body healthy. So, go and stock cereal, yogurt, beef, bananas and eggs.


MYTH #4:  THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO IF YOU'VE INHERITED YOUR DAD'S METABOLISM

What you weigh does have a lot to do with your genes according to a study conducted by the Science of Journal. The researchers conducted an experiment through a mice. They deleted a gene known as "MRAP2." This gene's job is to signal another gene already known to be involved in controlling appetite. Researchers noticed that "the mice got fat, ending up weighing twice as much as their normal siblings."

Don't lose hope though if your folks are fat. Watch your diet and exercise.



MYTH #5: EATING SPICY FOOD BOOSTS YOUR METABOLISM

Chilli pepper unfortunately don't do anything for your metabolism. While some studies have shown that very spicy food can increase metabolism, the boost would just be temporary.
