When it comes to alcoholic beverages, wine always gets the spotlight for being the classier and healthier choice. Beer, meanwhile, got stuck with a bad rep for its tendency to increase our waistlines. This is quite unfair for the frothy beverage which, aside from being much lighter on the wallet, also has a ton of health benefits.

But before you rush off to get your fill of the good stuff, we’d like to clarify that this is not a go signal to drink a whole case in one sitting. Beer, like most of the good things in life, should be consumed in moderation, and you can’t blame us for whatever shenanigans you get into after chugging down ten bottles in one go.

Now that that’s out of the way, read on to learn why it's good to drink a bottle or two tonight (don’t go overboard, may pasok pa bukas!). And don’t worry about getting a beer belly—dad bods are in right now, remember?

IT'S RICH IN ANTIOXIDANTS

Beer actually has the same amount of antioxidants (stuff that prevent or slow down cell damage) as its posher cousin, wine. The kind of antioxidants vary since hops and barley—the stuff beer is made of—are obviously very different from the grapes used in the production of wine. But hey, they’re still antioxidants, and that’s what’s important!

IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR HEART

Sure, beer’s one of our go-to post-breakup drinks, but as it turns out, the stuff’s can literally prevent a broken heart. An Italian study concluded that moderate (we repeat, moderate) beer consumption can actually cut your risk of heart disease by 31-percent. Let's drink to that, bros!

In fact, you can actually book an appointment at one of the beer spas in Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic, where you can soak in a boozy bath while downing a few pints.

IT'S NUTRITIOUS

Most beer varieties contain a truckload of vitamins and minerals, including impressive amounts of iron, magnesium, selenium, calcium, fiber, and B vitamins. Maximize your heath benefits by opting for dark beer instead of pale brews, as the former contains more of the healthy stuff.

Aside from having calcium (which y’all know is good for the bones), beer also contains high levels of silicon, which is necessary for keeping your skeleton in tip-top shape. In fact, a study revealed that female beer drinkers have denser bones than their alcohol-free counterparts which, if you ask us, is a very good reason to take your girl out for a few bottles tonight.

IT CAN KEEP YOU HYDRATED

Recharge after exercising by chugging down a bottle or two post-workout. Studies have proven that beer can actually help you retain liquid better than water, making it the perfect drink after a game of basketball with the boys.

Non-alcoholic beer, that is. The usual kind can actually wreak havoc on your sleeping habits and up your chances of getting sleep apnea, but non-alcoholic varieties were found to help people fall asleep faster and more soundly. It sure won’t hurt to try it, right?

IT CAN LOWER YOUR RISK OF DIABETES

...provided you drink in moderation. According to a study, men who drank 22 grams of alcoholic drinks (including beer) a day decreased their risk of getting Type B diabetes by 13-percent, while women who drank 24 grams lowered their chances by a whopping 40-percent. People who didn’t drink at all or who drank too much were actually most at risk of getting the disease.
