So you’re hankering for something to eat, but there’s barely any food in your kitchen. Some canned soup in your cupboard, half a loaf of bread in your pantry, a couple of eggs in the fridge, three packs of your favorite biskwit in a drawer—how the hell are you going to fill up your tummy with these?

Before you reach for your stack of restaurant delivery fliers, maybe you can scrounge up a few ways to use the few stuff you have in your kitchen/fridge before they go to waste.

Read on to learn about eight easy meals you can whip up using just a few basic ingredients!


1)   PANCAKES (FROM SCRATCH)

Pancakes are a no-fail comfort food—and they’re a no-brainer to make, too!

You can always use the pre-packaged mixes, but it’s also super easy to make it from scratch. Sift together 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour, 3 ½ teaspoons baking powder, a tablespoon of white sugar and a teaspoon of salt; add an egg, 1 ¼ cups of milk, and three tablespoons of melted butter; fry over medium heat.

The great thing about pancakes is that it’s very versatile, and you can add fruits, chocolate, and even bacon to spice it up. But since we're talking about food shortage in your kitchen here, it's already good by itself!


2)   BASIC MARINARA PASTA

The great thing about pasta is that it’s a no-fuss dish that looks more complicated than it really is.

Whip up a simple marinara by sautéing some chopped onions and garlic, mix in some canned tuna and mushrooms, toss in a pack of tomato sauce (or canned tomatoes), and season with salt and pepper (or, if you have ‘em, herbs like basil and rosemary).

Pour over cooked pasta, and you’re set! 


3)   GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICHES 

Here’s a yummy way to make use of the sad-looking tasty bread in your kitchen: slap on a couple of slices of cheese in between two slices and toss your sandwich in a pan until it turns a deliciously golden brown hue.

Have a few slices of bacon left in the fridge? Slice and dice 'em up and sprinkle it all over the sandwich!


4)   POOR MAN'S PIZZA

Here’s a more savory option for your leftover bread: smear some tomato sauce on a couple of slices, top with cheese, sliced ham, mushrooms, and whatever other ingredients you have on hand, and pop them in the oven until they’re nicely toasted. Easy-peasy!

5)   CRACKERS WITH DIP 

The best part about crackers is that you can use as dip whatever spreadable thing you have in your pantry, from peanut butter to quickmelt cheese to butter and sugar. Pry open a bottle of salsa if you’re feeling extra fancy!


6)   SCRAMBLED EGGS

Grab a couple of eggs from your fridge and scramble them along with whatever leftover or delata you have lying around in the kitchen. Canned tuna, cheese, hotdog slices, anything goes! Super easy, huh?


7)   "HOMECOOKED" CREAM OF WHATEVER SOUP 

Got a pack or a can of cream of anything (asparagus, mushroom, corn, whatever) soup mix? Mix it; add 1 ½ cups of milk, two tablespoons of butter, 1 ½ teaspoons salt, and some spices. Make it more filling by throwing in some chopped meat, corn, peas, or diced vegetables like potatoes and carrots if you have them.

Instant hearty meal!


8)   UPGRADED INSTANT NOODLES

Elevate your basic mami by adding in an egg; fresh leafy greens like pechay and sliced cabbage; corn kernels; and thinly sliced meat. Eat it with chopsticks and pretend you’re in your favorite sosyal ramen place.
