When Sole Academy first announced that they would be holding the world’s first Sneaker Carnival a few months back, it was hard not to set some pretty high expectations. After all, we’re talking about the sneaker boutique that manages to snag us some #veryrare releases on the regular—often, the very best of adidas Originals, Asics, and New Balance.

Fortunately, the boys and girls of SA served up a pretty solid festival for sneakerheads at the SM MOA Concert Grounds last Sunday, November 29.

If you’re a sneakerhead and you weren’t able to make it (which, by the way, shame on you), here’s what you missed a.k.a the things that made attending the festivities more than worth it:


1)   MASSIVE SNEAKER RELEASES

With the promise of a massive sneaker drop on the day itself, people flocked to the event and immediately fell in line for a chance to cop their choice of kicks. From the minute the gates opened all the way down to sunset, the line was easily 100-people long. It's not uncommon to see people queue for hours just to buy some shoes, but with this many dropping on the same day, the crowd really came out.


2)   UNRELEASED SNEAKER PREVIEWS

adidas Originals brought out the Tubular Doom—a yet unreleased variant of the breakout sneaker of the year, slated to be released in 2016. Reebok also busted out two pairs of Gundam-inspired Ventilators which haven’t yet seen the light of a local release.


3)   ALL KINDS OF GREAT MUSIC!

Beats and bands kept it loud throughout the afternoon and into the wee hours of the night at the Sneaker Carnival—it was a non-stop cavalcade, performance after performance (Up Dharma Down is always a treat to watch and hear live!), that kept sneakerheads bobbing their heads while checking out the loads of sneakers present.


4)   FOOD. LOTS OF IT

No carnival is complete without food! Food trucks and stalls set up shop at the event to dole out some pretty delicious grub that kept sneakerheads drooling over something other than nice kicks (and girls, that's up next!). Hey, in such an active event, we need all the energy we can get!


5)   SWEET GIRLS IN SWEET SHOES

If you expected the event to be a total sausage fest for sneaker geeks, you are dead wrong. The girls stepped up and represented the fairer sex's love for gorgeous kicks as well with some sneaker heat of their own.

6)   SNEAKERNEWS WAS THERE!

Every self-respecting sneakerhead knows Sneakernews.com—that much is certain. So, to see Yu Ming Wu, founder and editor of one of the top sneaker resources worldwide, in person was really quite significant. They also brought a caravan of Sneaker News magazines (which you could have him autograph for rare memorabilia during the event) and Pintrill pins with them, so you could get your fill of limited edition stuff.


7)   AN EPIC STREET ART PARTY

Art has always been a big part of sneaker culture—and few brands have made that clearer than adidas Originals. That's why Secret Fresh stepped out with an adidas installation for the event, complete with a street art mural and a display of Pharrell Superstars. On top of that, there was also an Air Jordan art display up at the Sneakernews booth for all to marvel at.


8)   SNEAKER KNOWLEDGE BOMBS

One of the best things about being a sneakerhead is being able to geek out about kicks-related tidbits, from a shoe's history to how you clean it. That's a department in which Sole Academy really excelled in; they set up five different brand booths in the form of giant sneaker boxes—easily the event's main attractions. In each booth, attendees were treated to creative displays of sneaker history and culture. It was hard not to leave each one with a deeper appreciation of a particular brand.


More than anything, the Sneaker Carnival proved to be a grand celebration of all the various worlds of which sneakers are a subculture. Music, food, art, sports, magazines—name it, and you could find it there.
