Smokin’

Like a fancy sports car, the N9 has no trouble finding a direct route to your brain’s emotional center. It looks phenomenal. The smooth, minimalist look is a proud, shining example of this generation’s design trends, and yet, it’s bold enough to go for a less traditional smart phone look. It ditches face buttons so that the entire front is occupied by a 3.9-inch ClearBlack AMOLED display (that’s why Nokia calls it their “all-screen” phone) that rivals the best out there.

Crystal clear

The N9’s AMOLED display features a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels. It looks exceptionally fluid and displays crisp colors, sharp text, and vibrant graphics. Techie.com.ph goes so far as to say that this might be the best display on a Nokia ever! It's a double jab of visual clarity and touch screen responsiveness.

Anatomy 101

Sleek is an understatement when it comes to the N9. But in spite of its svelte tapered top, bottom ends, and the curved sides, it fits snugly in your hands. Give the casing a good tap, and you’ll agree that this one is a tough nut to crack. Thank its polycarbonate construction for that. On the right side, you’ll find the volume and power rockers, while microSIM and microUSB slots sit on the top side. The speakers are located on the phone’s bottom.  

Oh snap!

On the phone’s back, you’ll find the N9’s 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss F2.2 wide-angle auto-focus lens, dual-LED flash and 720p HD video recording capability. Translation: it gets the job done, and it does it well enough. Images are crisp, and vibrant. Expectedly, there’s a bit of noise when taking images under low-light situations. Video recording features continuous autofocus, and allows you to fiddle around with white balance and exposure settings. Zooming is controlled by the volume buttons. 

Numbers and figures

Powering the Nokia N9 is Texas Instruments’ OMAP 3630 SoC which is a combination of a single-core 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU and a PowerVR SGX530 GPU, and 1 gigabyte of RAM. Impressive though not record-breaking numbers. What’s important however is that those specs are more than enough to run the phone smoothly. The phone handles apps, games (Angry Birds and Need For Speed are built in), and multi-tasking like a boss!

Meet MeeGo

The N9’s OS, MeeGo, is a winner. It’s user-friendly, fresh, zippy, intuitive, and classy.  Truly, fiddling around has never been easier in a Nokia smart phone. Only, there’s a catch: this is the first and last MeeGo-powered Nokia you’ll find, as the OS has been canned. It’s sad that the OS never had the chance to fulfill its beaming potential, so we’ll just have to enjoy it while it lasts. Check out Techie.com.ph’s full review of the OS here.
