FHM Year Ender 2011: The Gaming Blitz

Dead Space 2 and F.E.A.R. 3 gave us all a heart attack. Shooter fans had their trigger fingers tested to their limits with—and we suggest you take a deep breath now—Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, Killzone 3, Resistance 3, Gears of War 3, Serious Sam 3 (yes, there were a lot of "part 3’s" this year) Rage, and Crysis 2. Little Big Planet 2, and Portal 2, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution gave our noggins a little work out too. Now we were planning to go on some more…but then we took an arrow to the knee. Suffice it to say, 2011 in gaming overflowed with awesomeness, so here’s our best attempt to encapsulate the entirety of it with five of our favorites.

Mortal Kombat. Fighting games continued their comeback bid with Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, King of Fighters XIII, following the act of last year’s excellent Street Fighter IV. But our favorite is also the bloodiest: Mortal Kombat. The gore, the blood, the fatalities—the franchise went back to its roots, ditched all that was unnecessary and wrapped it in a package fit for modern eyes. The execution was flawless, and MK proved that everybody still does love kung-fu fighting.
