On May 15, some game called Diablo 3 will be released to an unsuspecting mass of gamers. You might have heard of it.
Okay, so we’re playing around. Because about the only thing accurate in those opening lines is that yes, Diablo 3 officially comes out on May 15. You never call it “some game,” and the mass of gamers are far from unsuspecting. And if you’re a gamer, you not only “might have heard of it,” you’ve glossed over all the little details Blizzard (its makers) have streamed steadily.
Diablo 3 is a massive game, and has a lot to live up to.
Its prequel Diablo 2, released in 2000, had us clicking the nights away, hoping a unique or set item would drop—the same way MMORPG players do now. The rush that accompanies finding one, long after our wrists had turned to jelly, and our eyes—now as red as the eponymous demon itself—made it gaming’s equivalent of cocaine. Defeating Diablo, his minions, and his brother Baal in the expansion pack Lord of Destruction, became a secondary priority to most players.
Could Diablo 3 become that? A week from now, we’ll find out. The excitement is definitely palpable.
But just to confirm, we posted this question over our Facebook page: “What is this Diablo 3?” Here are some of the best and most amusing replies.
