What were those workshops like?It wasn’t easy, especially the money side. I was just on allowance. My co-workshoppers and I shot with a Super 8 film camera and film stock was expensive. To cut on costs, I’d walk from Katipunan Avenue to Arcegas. I’d gather my 10-centavo coins para maging piso. I’d use those coins to buy ice and soup. The money I saved, I used to buy back issues of American Cinematographer magazine and film stock for my workshop project. When I finished my project, I showed it to the “powers-that-be” at Mowelfund. One of them actually told me—and I quote him verbatim: “You have no future in film. I suggest you go back to Davao City and take another course.” I was like 17 years old then. After the presentation, I cried because I was challenged. I told myself, “We’ll see…”

Who do you consider the sexiest movie female monster of all time?
I’ve always had a crush on the evil stepmother Maleficent in Snow White. And who was that woman who kidnapped the Dalmatians? Cruela de Ville! Hot din siya.

How about your favorite Pinoy monster or scary creature?
I remember when I was a kid, I saw a Sampaguita movie that I think was titled, Lalaki sa Putik. It was about a baby that was thrown in the swamp. Lumaki yung baby at naging taong putik. Tuwang-tuwa ako roon.

What horror film can’t you watch alone?
I still get scared with The Exorcist. It’s the best scary movie for me.
