MARC: I’m not sure. I know there were a lot of great things that came out of the film industry but I never got to watch any of them apart from Joaquin Valdes’ “Bulong,” which totally blew my mind.
SAM: Actually, marami! Aga, Maricel, and Angelica were great in A Love Story. Maraming magaling na film last year.
ERWIN: For a formula film, I personally liked the Toni Gonzaga, Vhong Navarro [My Only U], directed by Cathy Garcia Molina. Basically the premise was they were both dying. I thought it was a well-made commercial film. I watched it and I enjoyed it, that’s more than I can say for a lot of the independent films that I saw in 2008. A lot of them just really made me want to say, “Why, Lord why?” Another film I enjoyed is Namets, another Ilonggo film. It’s still a romantic comedy but with food, Ilonggo food. It has Peque Gallaga as parang some Mafia Mafioso, and Angel Jacob as the only non-Ilonggo cast. It was shot entirely in Bacolod. The script by Vince Groyon was a little clunky, I don’t think he’s really that adept at comedy, but the film was really charming. And you get to see other parts of the country, it’s not Manila-centric.
SAM: On the other hand, one of the films I heard that was done in bad taste talaga was Manny Pacquiao’s Anak ng Kumander. I think he should stick to boxing, that’s where he belongs and that’s how we all respect him.
ERWIN: I, for one, liked Mark Gil’s role in Alon, I didn’t like the film, but for once he’s not playing that guy in Batch ’81. It was a silent, Ingmar Bergman-kind of film. You can really see how much depth he has as an actor. Also Eula Valdez was fantastic in it. I think the worst actress was KC Concepcion, kasi that film she did with Richard Gutierrez, not only did she look like a man, she acted like one.
LUIS: And it wasn’t a sex change movie.
