'I'm uncomfortable riding ships!'
INTERVIEW: GAY DOMINGO

How does this documentary depict the maritime industry in the Philippines?

The story happened in 1987. It would be unfair to say that nothing has changed in our maritime industry. But during that time, our safety records were highly questionable. It is also amazing to learn that certain companies with a really bad history of safety then still ply our seas until now.

Do you like riding ocean liners? Why or why not?

I am not a "sea" person. I don't even like the beach. I don't feel comfortable riding ships.

When was the last time you rode an ocean liner? Where did you go? What was the trip like?

I think the last time was in the early 2000. We went to Lubang island. It was a very old ship. I couldn't rest during the six-hour journey. It was also packed. I don't know if it was overloaded, but one passenger went to our cabin having the same ticket and bed number as us!

What are your plans for Asia' Titanic after it is shown on National Geographic?

Asia's Titanic is the property of National Geographic Society. I hope schools in the Philippines will show it to our students [so that they can] learn about that sad moment in our history. I also want our maritime industry to see it and remember the past.

Any plans for another documentary?

I am still very keen in doing the Ormoc tragedy. That event is one of the world's worst environmental disasters.

What kind of satisfaction does making a documentary give you that making feature films does not?

Documentary filmmaking talks about real people, events, and drama. To tell a story based on facts is a challenge. There is nothing fictional about it so you are dependent on factual information.
