So what did Ely Buendia say when you formed Archipelago?
He was very supportive. Pag magkakasama kami sa van, nagkakakwentuhan kami sa mga progress ng mga projects namin. Kasi Ely also has the Ely Buendia and Francis M. project, which I think is called In Love and War. Tapos si Doc naman has always been with multiple bands such as Daydream Cycle, Prank Sinatra and also some session work for Imago.
So palagi kaming nagkwekwentuhan about our projects—about the music, about work in the studio, about who we’re getting as designers and video directors, things like that. Ely is very aware of all this. To assume that there is some friction over the point of loyalty or allegiance namin sa isa’t-isa is to see things is all melodrama. It doesn’t happen like that in real life. Malinaw naman sa amin ang mga priorities namin. It’s very clear to the members of Pupil that Archipelago is not a side band. With regard to my two main bands, parang meron akong dalawang anak at mahal ko sila pareho, at priority ko sila pareho. I prioritize my two bands over all the other things I do. And of course I will prioritize family above all, because this is really just rock and roll.
Let’s talk about your bandmates. What does each one bring to the table?
The reason this time is the best time to do Archipelago is because I’ve finally met these guys who I am sure are the guys I needed to work with.
Pat Tirano, has been my co-worker not just on the Pupil and Spongecola albums. He’s also a long time friend who I consider to be as the mad scientist of the group. He likes playing with his toys, and attaching all sorts of gadgets to his signal line. He plays with a laptop, live, and that does crazy things to his sound. He’s the most experimental. He’s also the most shy of the group. I think he’ll have the most trouble once the band plays to a bigger audience but I’m pretty sure he’ll be able to make the adjustment.
