Wendell Garcia is the most playful, the most fun, the most jovial and the friendliest. He’s also a very exciting drummer. When Chad, the bassist, joined the band, we were already recording our album. And sabi ni Chad nung nadinig niya na nagda-drums si Wendell, “drums pa lang, may istorya na.” Wendell is a storyteller on the drums. He keeps things fun, and I need a bandmate who will keep things fun because I think the sole purpose God put in me is to worry about everything, which I do.

Chad Rialp, ironically, is the voice of sobriety. He’s deadpan, but he’s funny in his own way. For example, I get fiery over an issue about the band, because I am currently the band’s manager as well. Chad is the one who can keep a cool head, and help me see things in a more sober perspective.

So pag nagkakasama na talaga kaming banda, we all end up having fun. I’m a fan of each of them. I think that each of them deserves to be recognized as one of the best at their instrument in the country.

Given that all the members are very talented, how are you able to concoct the sound of Archipelago with some semblance of direction?
I am proud to say this:
Walang direction ang tunog ng Archipelago. We could do a second album and it would be a jazz album. We don’t really have a sound, and I’d like to keep things that way.

I hate bands that have a sound. It’s like, you can put their songs together, come up with an hour-long medley, and it will still feel like the same song. I think that’s not progressive, and does very little for the progress of music. I’m sure it’s fun to play and listen to, but it’s just not going to make us better as a scene vis a vis the rest of the world.

I like bands that have no rules, which is who we aspire to be.
