And more than 20 years later, how does the ehem, passion?
Tumatanda na! Ayaw na ng tuhod mo! Not that we’ve lost the spice, pero nag-evolve na.
As you mature, some things become more important. You’re getting to know each other more, mas maraming expressions of love ngayon—holding hands, cards, notes, text messages, iba na yung pihit.

You and Laurice were at the peak of yoru careers when you took a hiatus from showbiz to go on a mission as advocates of the Marian Movement of Peace. What spurred this sudden leap of faith?
It was just my birthday, the kids wanted to go to mass with me, dun sa mass, parang may dumating na calling:” You want to follow me?” Hindi ko alam pero pinakinggan ko at sinakyan ko! We were at the peak of our careers. Lahat pimuputok. Kaya siguro kung anu-anong mga patawa ang kumalat diyan, kesyo naloloko na kami, nasa bundok na raw kami.

But we never did that! We were busy giving talks sa churches, the lay people talking to bishops…nung sinakyan ko, sinakyan ng buong pamilya ko. We left everything, we went bankrupt. But we were happy doing that, we’ve never been so close! Naging malinaw sa kin yung “Why am I here?” We never thought we’d go back to showbiz.

But you did. Why?
Parang it was just time to. Ang unang ginawa namin, Tanging Yaman. Nung panahon na yun, we wre going against the bomba current—and it became a box office hit. It won awards! Ngayon, as artists, kailangan yung trabaho namin makakapagbigay-puri sa Diyos. Hindi naman tipong “Allelujah! Allelujah!” In our films, if we are able to espouse family, to espouse love, yun na yun.

Kontrabida ako ngayon sa Te Amo, kung napakita ko yung kamalian—exposing evil for what it is, exposing good for what it is—yun na yun. But on guard na kami now that we’re back. Ibig sabihin, okay gagamitin namin yung resources habang andiyan, pero pag tinawag ka ni Boss dapat handa kang bitawan lahat yan.
