The Friendship Kayak team just made a nationwide accomplishment – literally. Composed of Singaporean outdoor sports buff Khoo Swee Chiow and Filipino Buzzy Budlong, two daring adventurers somehow managed to make one dream expedition come true – establish the first Kayak trail in the Philippines.
The team paddled from Saranggani province all the way to Pagudpod. That’s 3,300 miles across 50 provinces in a very impressive timetable of 88 days to you.
Count in super typhoons Ondoy, Pepeng, and Santi on the expedition, and we’ve got a hell of a story in our hands. We recently met up with his team at R.O.X. sports store to hear all about it.
Buzzy, in all of his confidence, came up to us with a big grin on his face – a grin only a man who has done something great would give. A simple glimpse at the guy would do the trick – you would think that it is only just that he accomplished this feat.
His mannerisms and the sport of kayaking fit together like a hand in a glove. Buzzy has that humble swagger in him that affirms how credible he is not only as an athlete, but also as a person sharing an incredible story.
How significant are the sponsors in your expedition? People don’t always realize how big their role is on an athlete’s performance.
Well first, R.O.X. and Primer Group, without their financial support we cannot really do this. When it comes to equipment, we have plenty of choices.
As much as possible we opt for local ones like what Habagat [his team] is doing here. It’s not just imported products that we push through. We would also like to carry our local manufacturers or kayak makers to improve their quality.
Would you be open to the possibility of endorsing local brands?
Of course, I would love to. I have a lot of friends making kayaks and they’ve been asking me for advice. I’m very supportive of them.
