The rise in temperature brings about disruptions in the ecosystem, a rise in the sea level, unpredictable rain patterns, and more severe storms among others. We need not look any further than our own shores actually. Ondoy might just be the beginning, should the build-up of greenhouse gases continue unabated.
Believe us. Unless, of course you want Al Gore giving you homily.
Armageddon (1998)
The scenario: A humongous space rock hurtles towards earth, threatening to end the world like an epic car crash. Meanwhile, “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” becomes a worldwide hit, giving jaded rockers Aerosmith, some new life.
Could it happen?
If global warming doesn’t take us first or if 2012 was really just a juvenile Mayan prank, there’s a huge chance a meteor will hit us.
There’s actually one asteroid that’s hanging out nearby that caught the attention of NASA scientists. Named 2004 MN4, this asteroid is 400-meters wide, so yeah, if it hits us, it’s going to hit with the force of about a hundred nuclear bombs. That’s enough to decimate the whole of Metro Manila, if not the whole of Luzon, though not enough to really destroy the world. But hey, the universe is full of surprises, so something bigger might not be too far off.
28 Days Later (2004)
The Scenario: Guy wakes up in hospital bed, finds himself in the ghost town remains of his city. It turns out the city has been infected by something called the Rage virus that transforms people into mindless killing machines.
Could it happen?
Ah, the zombie apocalypse. It seems farfetched, but not farfetched enough that we stop watching all those darned zombie movies. But could it really happen?
Well, the closest thing we have to a Rage virus might be the Mad Cow disease, which turns cows into raging bulls that you really wouldn’t want to be near. Eating the meat of an infected cow, will transmit the virus to you, leading to vaguely zombie-like symptoms such as lack of coordination, and rapidly-developing delirium. Here's a video about it, in case you need solid demonstration
It’s a long shot, but hey, viruses do evolve. It might happen, just not as likely as hitting an asteroid or global warming.
