Best Indie Film: Engkwentro
How many times have we talked about Pepe Diokno in this site?
We practically have a man-crush on the young auteur, and for good reason: Engkwentro.
His gritty, smart film about two brothers and the decisions they make that lead to an all-out engkwentro, made the country proud by winning awards in the 66th Venice Film Festival. And in spite of its dark and broody undercurrents, the film gives hope to the future of Filipino filmmaking.
Best Pinoy Film: Kimmy Dora
In Kimmy Dora, we saw just how talented and how refined Eugene Domingo's thespic skills are. The film is by far, the funniest and wittiest Pinoy film in recent memory.
Best of all, it was a movie that didn’t simply rely on slapstick comedy as most Pinoy comedy films are wont to do. That is the reason we bestow upon Kimmy Dora the award for the Best Pinoy Film in 2009.
The fact that it became a surprise hit, running in cinemas for as long as three weeks, and earning quite spectacularly at the box office, we'd go as far as saying that Kimmy Dora is the movie of the year.
