RANDY COUTURE
Action Hero Flicks: The Scorpion King: Rise of a Warrior (2008), Cradle 2 the Grave (2003)
Tough Guy Gesture: Randy Couture has pounded the likes of Brandon Vera and Tim Sylvia, all after turning 40 (the usual retiring age among MMA fighters). Now at 47 years of age, Couture’s the only fighter who has agreed to fight top heavyweight boxer James Toney later this month.
Tough Guy Type: Hard-Earned Respect
Couture and his age is something everyone will be talking about as long as he keeps winning. The fact that he’s an MMA fighter doesn’t just give him respect, but the fact he’s 47 does.
JET LI
Action Hero Flicks: Romeo Must Die (2000), Once Upon A Time in China (1991), The One (2001)
Tough Guy Gesture: On December 2004, while on a vacation with his daughter in Maldives, a 9.0 earthquake took place causing a massive tsunami towards them. Li wasted no time: He carried his daughter and ran all the way upstairs to safety, injuring his foot in the process.
Tough Guy Type: Tough by Culture
Jet Li probably doesn’t want to fight, but wouldn’t mind fighting to defend himself. He has no idea what being tough means, but he almost certainly knew they’d survive that tsunami.
DOLPH LUNDGREN
Action Hero Flicks: Universal Soldier (1992), Masters of the Universe (1987), Rocky IV (1985)
Tough Guy Gesture: on January 2009, three masked burglars broke into the Lundgren residence in Spain. The men tied up and threatened his wife, but immediately fled when they saw a family photo and realized that the house was owned by Dolph Lundgren. Boom!
Tough Guy Type: Mythical
It helps that the stereotype Lundgren has created for himself remains to this day. He can wear a girly dress and those robbers would still flee in panic. His tough image has achieved immortality.
