Martin Scorsese’s backdrop is Boston’s south end where the police are up against a big crime ring. Here, a young officer (DiCaprio) is given a hefty assignment—infiltrate the gang that’s led by Costello (Nicholson). At the other end of this yarn is a crime youngster (Damon), who’s about to penetrate cop land. Who wrecks each other’s turf first? It’s all a big psycho battle, and the victor ends up winning his life.

- Scorsese wanted everything to be shot in Boston, but the crew filmed most of the scenes in New York instead because of a generous 15-percent tax cut.
