For the torpe at the bar
“I Hope That I Don’t Fall in Love with You” by Tom Waits
Tom Waits goes into the bar, and spots this beautiful woman. “I hope that I won’t fall in love with you,” he sings, wistfully, “because falling in love just makes me blue.”

He doesn’t really mean the line, and he keeps eyeing her all night. Her companion leaves, and the seat next to her is empty, but he keeps his distance and nurses his drink.

At the end of the night, he realizes she’s gone, and realizes, “I think that I just fell in love with you,” leaving him with nothing to do but order another round. At least the beer won’t leave him blue. Or give him Chlamydia.

For the man who actually gets lucky at the bar
“Barrier Reef” by Old 97’s
Miller, back with his band Old 97’s, walks up to a girl in a bar in this alt-country ditty, and uses either the greatest or the lamest pickup line ever: “My name is Stewart Ransom Miller, I’m a serial lady killer.”

The girl had a better comeback though: “I’m already dead.” Incredibly, she ends up going home with him.

It wasn’t all good when they got home though. “My heart just wasn’t in it, not for a single minute,” he sings. “Didn’t do no good. Well, I didn’t think it would.” Maybe it was the alcohol.
