The punk intent is hardly missable. Hilera’s self-titled record begins with the catchy “Rhyme Without Reason” and is immediately followed up with the superficial belligerence of “The Pot of Gold.” And then the punk thing sort of gets lost, with them sounding more like Greenday than The Who. Still, like most old school punk, the thickness of the sound is kept at bay, thanks to the minimal three-man setup, but with the grating noise exploited to full effect. Indeed, Hilera has enough noise but isn’t heavy. Midway into the record, Hilera burns the hatred, turns mushy, becoming more like lovers than fighters. We reckon they put the attitude at the beginning and left nothing for the end game.
