And of course, our Honorable mentions:

  • No Ferrari, McLaren in F1

Formula One entered un-chartered territory in 2009 when neither McLaren nor Ferrari ruled the circuit. First-time winners Brawn GP and Jenson Button win the Constructors’ Championship and Driver’s Championship.

Not only was the year plagued with shocks and surprises, ranging from life-threatening accidents—Massa’s fractured skull—to off-track scandals, it also saw the ushering in of a new top brass for many teams.

  • UFC 100

In July, UFC 100 lived up to its hype. Highlights of the events included a middleweight bout between Japanese Yoshihiro “Sexyama” Akiyama and American Alan Belcher, which the Japanese won via split decision.

Next was a middleweight bout between American Dan Henderson and Brit Michael Bisping, opposing coaches on the 9th season of The Ultimate Fighter, The Ultimate Fighter: United States vs. United Kingdom.

Henderson led Team USA and Bisping, Team UK. The American vowed to shut the Brit up, which he did: Henderson defeated Bisping via KO (punch) at 3:20 of round 2.

The co-main event featured Georges “Rush” St-Pierre, defending his Welterweight Championship against Thiago Alves. After five rounds of takedowns from the Quebec native, St-Pierre went home with the win via unanimous decision to retain the UFC Welterweight championship and a groin injury, which he said to have felt on the third round.

Then there was the heavyweight bout, featuring UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar vs. former champ Frabk Mir, who won their previous fight via a kneebar submission.

Lesnar defeated Mir via TKO at 1:48 of round 2 to retain the UFC Heavyweight championship and unify the Interim UFC Heavyweight championship. Brock Lesnar became the Undisputed UFC Heavyweight Champion.
