“I felt I was insulted.”
When Rabeh Al-Hussaini found out that Ateneo teammate Nonoy Baclao was chosen by Air21 Express as the top overall pick in the 2010 PBA draft Sunday night, he soaked it in for a moment before he could mutter those words.
“It’s okay,” the former 2008 UAAP MVP exclaimed during the on-stage interview. “There was no communication from Air21 if I will be selected No.2.” Rabeh was instantly drafted as the second overall pick by the same team.
Head coach Yeng Guiao’s explains the logic behind the unexpected draft drama: “The main idea here is to give Baclao the much-needed confidence, that’s why we selected him No.1. But I see no problem with it as long as I have those players.”
Yeah, Rabeh. No need to fuzz over it, it’s not like you’re about to pull of a Darko Milicic in the PBA. In fact plenty of runner-ups have gone on to become bigger stars than their draft counterparts. Five of them cagers coming up:
