HEARTBREAKERS:
GEC CHIA (2002 UAAP)

“We needed to win two times against UE to qualify for the 2002 Finals. Our second game was close, a bad time for me to commit so many errors. Die-hard fans were shouting at Coach Joel Banal; they wanted me out of the game! The play before my shot, UE committed a turnover. We didn’t have a timeout anymore. So with seven seconds to go Coach Joel just told us to attack and get an open man to take the shot. Ako yung na-open. When I released it, I knew it had a chance to go in. I was really happy that it went in kasi it brought us to the finals and we won the championship after 14 years. That shot did a lot for a lot of people.”
BENNY CHENG (1991 NCAA)
“Experts said our chances of repeating as NCAA champs in 1991 were slim. We lost our starting center Kevin Ramas to the pros. So at 6’3” ako na yung natirang malaki. But the hunger to win was still there. We wanted to break kasi yung once-every-14-years-championship-jinx ng Mapua. During the Finals, San Beda was up by one. Coach Joel wanted me to get the ball sa low post but our guard, Tade Ramos, was open so he took the shot. He missed but I got the offensive rebound and scored on a put-back. Nag-panic yung San Beda after that. They still had a chance to win but they bungled their last play. I thank God for this experience. And it’s great to know na marami pa ring nakaaalala nung time
na yun.”
