Sheree...is that all there is to it—a single name with an obviously mangled spelling of Cherie, Sherry...?
Well, no. My real name is Cherry Hazel Sweet Fae Bautista Agustin.

Good God, cruel parents! How did they think you could get through kindergarten having to write down that name?
Ha, ha, ha! Of course, I had to shorten it so it would be easy for me to write it down. In fact, it took me until Grade 1 before I could memorize that name.

And who among those four girls—Cherry, Hazel, Sweet, and Fae—were you named after first?
Ha, ha, I guess it would have to be Cherry. My mom says that she actually got my name from Cherie Gil because during that time, I think, she had a movie out called Problem Child. I think my mom liked the movie very much so she named me after her. Pero hindi ako problem child ha! I’m a good girl!

Your mom was wrong, she should have named you Vivian. You look much more like Vivian Velez in her prime!
Oo nga e, palaging sinasabi sa akin ‘yan ng mga tao. But to tell you the truth, I haven’t seen her or her movies, that’s why I would like to meet her someday. I have gotten into crazy situations because of the resemblance. An incident I will never forget was one night my mom and I went ballroom dancing. Kasi I went to the comfort room then, and as I was fixing myself up in front of the mirror, an old lady came up to me and blurted out, “Vivian? Vivian! Vivian, ikaw ba ‘yan Vivian?!” I was surprised! I told her no, I wasn’t her but she kept insisting I was her. Nagkuwento siya, and it turned out she was a manghuhula! I think she told me I would become famous or something.

She could be right about the fame thing. For one, Viva is launching you as a sexy singer. How did you get the gig?
Well, I performed in Trumpets Philippines’ production of The Little Mermaid before Viva discovered me. I had been singing in lounges, sometimes with a band, in Cagayan de Oro. But the one who really encouraged me to try it out here in Manila was ate Patricia (Javier). She saw me perform in Cagayan de Oro and told me to go here. Jessica Rodriguez is my manager and she brought me to Boss Vic.

Yes, we hear there’s an interesting story behind this: As Boss Vic was sizing you up you were singing a tune, that’s when he changed his mind from making you an actress to singer outright.
(Smiles) Yes...well, actually they asked me rin to sing. I think it was a Christina Aguilera song, ‘yung “Reflections.” Anyway, I was always singing naman ever since, makapal talaga ang mukha kong kumanta! Nasuyod ko na yata lahat ng contests in Cagayan de Oro! At first my mom was against it, but when there would be contests I’d sneak out of the house and join. Tapos maririnig nila na parang boses ko ’yung kumakanta sa kabilang barrio, and they’d find me there! When my mom knew she couldn’t stop me, she let me be.

How will you be packaged as a pop star?
I think Viva wants me to be something like a Christina Aguilera mixed with a little Shakira. But my songs would sound more like ballads although there would be some pop in it as well.

So we wouldn’t be hearing you singing saucy double-meaning songs at all?
Kung gan’un ba talaga ang uso, bakit hindi?
