What got you involved in heavy metal in the first place?
I was 18 when I started listening to metal bands especially Nightwish [female-led Finnish band fusing metal and symphonic elements]. I felt an overwhelming experience and challenge listening to it. I decided to explore more of it and so I started my own metal band.

So one day you decided to do heavy metal and suddenly you could shred guitars?
No, I learned my guitar playing techniques from Chad Robles, who plays for Eternal Now. I used to hang out in one music store and watch him and other guitarists play. Then I took formal lessons on the basics of guitar scales at the RJ School of Music, after which I self-taught through watching guitar and bass instructional DVDs.

How does it feel to be one of the few ladies in the metal scene?
Mahirap pag babae kasi it’s male-dominated, and then, especially when the band is female-fronted, it’s known as a chick band na agad. Dapat may alam ka rin, di lang pa-cute.

What if, say, one day, they decided to wear briefs on stage?
Ah! Wala na yun, aalis na ako sa banda! Ha ha!

How did you figure out you could sing for a metal band?
My ex-boyfriend used to be a drummer for a metal band. Once during their practice, I started playing with the microphone. He instantly had an idea that I can sing their music.

Do girls in bands usually end up with band mates?
Hindi naman. Depende sa liking ng babae. Basta ang choice ko yung manly and, for some reason—ewan ko ba kung bakit—puro drummer ang nagiging boyfriend ko! Ha ha!

Of all the music genres, why metal?
Actually I don’t really know. Basta whenever I hear metal music parang there’s some kind of drive to it that I really appreciate. It deviates from the common themes of other songs, yung iba kasi lagi na lang about love.

Does being a metalhead means you hate hip-hop?
As much as possible I don’t want to be a purist. Marami rin akong favorite songs that aren’t heavy metal. My mom brought me up listening to classical. I also like Broadway songs.

rom what metal genre do you belong exactly?
Mas leaning ako sa death metal. So ang tugtugan namin medyo heavier on the guitar distortions tapos may pagka-dark din ang lyrics. Ang funny part pa, ang vocals kasi ng death metal usually harsh ang sound na low-pitched. So medyo pang lalaki ang tunog. Ha ha ha!

So, you’re saying you sound more like Oscar the Grouch when on stage?
I sound exactly like that. Ha ha ha! Sanay na nga ako sa reaction ng audience kapag humahataw na ako sa gigs. They’ll usually say, “Babae ba talaga iyon? Akala ko lalaki!”
