The glowing vibe you get from this coming-of-age tale about a homosexual 12-year-old (Nathan Lopez), the youngest in a family of crooks, feeling the first pangs of love for a policeman (JR Valentin) is honestly earned. The technicals may not be up to par—some shots are way too dark, hooray for digital technology!—but the film’s heart is there for all to see.

How did you think of the name of the character, Maximo Oliveros?
I was thinking of the most unsuitable name for a 12-year-old gay boy and Maximo just came to me. And I also had a childhood friend named Macmac who was very gay so it was partly influenced by that name. For Oliveros, there`s a street along EDSA named Oliveros where my best friend used to live. I always called it Olivares and she always corrected me. So i used Oliveros so i wouldn`t forget the name. Anyway she doesn`t live there anymore and most of the people who watched the movie made the same mistake as I did and called the movie Maximo Olivares.
