9. TORRID RUN
YEAR: 1987
Since bolting out of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1978 to join the UAAP, the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles found it difficult to carry over their winning ways. Ateneo hopefuls had to wait nine years for their first taste of UAAP gold. The long wait, however, was made sweeter by a now legendary championship victory. Possessing a twice-to-beat edge over the Jerry Codinera-led UE Red Warriors, the Blue Eagles appeared to be too comfortable with their cushion, allowing UE to go up by 20 points with still 10 minutes remaining in the game. A rally was inevitable. Led by the sharp-shooting Jet Nieto and talented point guard Jun Reyes, the Blue Eagles unleashed a blistering 31-9 comeback to win the game, 94-92.
10 “UHM, LOKO KA!”
YEAR: 2005
Coming off a heartbreaking championship loss to La Salle the year before, FEU’s King Tamaraw Arwind Santos decided to forego heading to the pros for another crack at UAAP glory. His desire for redemption was most evident during game one of their best-of-three championship series with La Salle. Down by three in the dying seconds of the game, Santos single-handedly carried his team to victory with five straight points, 75-73. At the end of the game, Santos and La Salle’s Joseph Yeo got into a heated argument at midcourt. In what seemed to be an attempt to pacify the feuding stars, La Salle assistant team manager Manny Salgado rose from his seat and headed towards the warring players. But, according to Salgado, Santos let rip some “slanderous remarks” toward him. What happened next was one of the most disturbing seconds in college basketball. In a fit of rage, Salgado punched Santos at the back of his head before fleeing back to the La Salle bench. The incident was caught on television. The UAAP board acted swiftly, banning Salgado from all UAAP activities for life. It was the gravest individual sanction handed out by the board to date.
