Film Cycle to Celebrate Mexican Revolution at Instituto Cervantes de Manila
Instituto Cervantes de Manila, in collaboration with the Mexican Embassy in the Philippines, will be celebrating the Mexican Revolution with a showcase of classic Mexican films called México: Cine y revolución.

Eight films will be shown in total, all  of which were chosen to represent the wave of innovation that swept through Mexican cinema right after the Mexican Revolution in the early 1900s.

All screenings will be held at Instituto Cervantes’ Salon de Actos every Saturday at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The showcase kick off this Saturday, September 4, 4 PM with Fernando Fuentes’ Vámonos con Pancho Villa (Let’s go with Pancho Villa). The movie is shot in 1936, set to a backdrop of the revolution that swept the country. It will be followed by Fernando Fuentes’ El prisionero 13 (Prisoner 13).

On September 11, 4 PM, El compadre Mendoza (Godfather Mendoza) will be shown, which is a 1934 film about ambitious landowner Rosalio Mendoza who goes to great lengths to appease both the government and the revolutionaries.

At 6 p.m. is De todos modos Juan te llamas (The General’s Daughter), which revolves around family conflicts of a very macho governmental general, religious fanatics, and peasants who fight for their rights.

Raul Kamffer’s Ora sí, tenemos que ganar (Pray we have to win) will be shown on September 18, 4 PM, with Matilde Landeta’s La  negra Angustias (The Black Angustias) screening at 6 PM.

Concluding the event on September 25, 4 p.m., is Frida, Naturaleza Viva (Frida, Living Nature), which is biopic about Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.

It is directed by Paul Leduc in 1986, and is considered as the best film rendition of the Mexican artist’s life. Following it is another Paul Leduc film: the1973 film, Reed: México insurgente (Reed: Insurgent Mexico).
