Like polar opposites in magnets, the sweet science that is boxing most usually concludes with a winner and a loser. Sometimes, it can also end up in draws, whereas no conclusions are reached.
There could be accidents as well, like a high school lab experiment gone kaboom.
And in a boxing match held a day prior to the Pacquiao-Cotto megafight last November 15, such a dreaded thing happened.
Z Gorres, a Filipino bantamweight nicknamed “The Dream,” won his match against Luis Melendez, alright.
But the jubilation was short-lived.
Shortly after, he ended up in a heap, knocked out cold due to a condition called subdural hematoma.
Little did we know that the powerful blow which Melendez landed late in the 10th round had more severe repercussions outside the ring.
So what is subdural hematoma?
Subdural hematoma is a kind of brain injury wherein blood collects on the surface of the brain. In medical terms, that area can be more distinctly defined as the area within the inner meningeal layer of the dura mater, which is the outermost and toughest layer of the three membranes covering the brain.
