Remember 2012’s Spring Breakers? The film, which follows the adventures of four bikini-clad, hard-partying college girls, is already slated for a sequel.
Though not much has been confirmed, there’s some info circulating on the internet about it. Below you’ll find a compilation of every detail we know so far, from the release date, casting choices, and more.
And the title is...
Initially, the sequel is rumored to be called Spring Breakers: The Second Coming. But because the film is more of a follow-up rather than a direct sequel, the producers thought that The Beach Bum would be a more appropriate title.
What is it going to be all about?
The Beach Bum tells the story of a group of Spring Breakers who battle it out with a conservative Christian group that tries to convert them. American film producer John Lesher says, “[It’s] a refreshingly original, irreverent, and hilarious stoner comedy [movie].”
No more James Franco
The 39-year-old Hollywood actor confirmed on Instagram that he’s not going to be a part of The Beach Bum. He even blasted the upcoming movie, saying: “The original was wholly Harmony’s creation and these producers are capitalizing on that innovative film to make money on a weak sequel. I want everyone to know that whoever is involved in the sequel is jumping on board a poison ship.” James has already taken down his post, as of writing.
Matthew McConaughey, who won an Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club, will take the lead role instead. He will play Moondog, “a rebellious and lovable rogue who lives life large.”
Thorsten Schumacher, one of the producers, commented: “Exhilarating and outrageous, Matthew McConaughey’s Moondog character is pure charisma—a force of nature and an uncompromising maverick with a lust for life and everything it throws at him.”
It looks like the original cast will not be part of the movie
In an interview with HollywoodLife.com, Vanessa Hudgens, one of the original cast members of Spring Breakers, said that the original cast is unlikely to return. “I love what we did with Spring Breakers!” She explained. “I think that it is amazing and it is something that we are all proud of. I don’t think any of us are a part of the second one so I am not sure what they are doing, I am not sure what it is even about.”
Film distributor Wild Bunch’s co-chief Vincent Maraval, however, assured that some of the old cast members would return.
There’s a (vague) release date
No specific date yet, but it will be released in 2018. Shooting will begin this September.
