If the Mayans are to be believed, the world will be no more a year from now. Maybe it’s for real, or maybe we’re riled up for nothing more than Y2K ver. 2.12. Whatever the case may be, we still have a year ahead of us—and that’s a lot of time for us to get a lot of things done. Just don’t do anything too silly (i.e. selling all your stuff and making a permanent move to the mountains) in case this 2012 scare is all but a nasty prank from our ancients.
Above: A firework prank gone wrong.
What’s a certainty though is that New Year’s Eve 2011 is definitely happening, and we’re not going to let it pass without a bang. And by bang, we mean music. Here’s a little playlist to help you shake off whatever negativity you’ve gotten from the year that was, get the party started, and welcome 2012 with some love.
1) R.E.M. - "It’s The End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)"
R.E.M. is no more, but the music lives on. And this song is the perfect tune to tell everybody that you ain’t worried about no apocalypse. Let the zombies come, the aliens invade, and the meteors fall; we’re not going to let the looming threat of Judgment Day stop us from feeling fine.
2) Hopesfall - "End of an Era"
The first step to feeling fine is to let it all out. You’ve had your share of ups and downs, as in any year, but now it’s time to put 2011’s trash into one big sack and toss it into a flaming pit. Release all ill feelings—scream along to this song if you want—and usher in a new year knowing you’ve gotten the shit out of your system.
3) Bee Gees - "Stayin' Alive"
Now, breathe. Relax, because it’s time now for you to absorb some good vibes. Snap those fingers, and steadily get into the groove of this classic tune. If there’s one thing you can be thankful for, it’s this: you’re still breathing; you can still snap those fingers, because baby, you’ve survived the year, and you have another 365 days to stay alive.
4) Beastie Boys – "(You Gotta) Fight for your Right (To Party)"
Or maybe 364. Because you’re going to spend the rest of January 1 in a semi-coma if you did New Year’s Eve right, and you fought for your right to party. “Do you like parties?” the guys ask at the start of the video. We’ll let you answer that one for yourself. Our answer of course is, definitely, exacta mundo, we do.
