There has been a lot of buzz surrounding Metro Manila, the gritty action thriller starring Jake Macapagal and FHM babe Althea Vega. It has even been slated as the UK’s official entry to the Oscars Best Foreign Language Film category.
In the film, we follow Oscar Ramirez and his family who are tired of the sullen travesties of rural living. They leave their lives in the fields for greener pastures in Manila when Oscar scores a job with an armored truck company. He thinks this is the right move, but then danger and corruption permeate his new profession, putting him and the rest of his family in harm’s way. How will life turn out for the man who just wanted a better life? Catch the film as it has opened nationwide yesterday, October 9, and find out.
With our country’s capital as its backdrop, the film infuses a lot of melodramatic soap opera elements with the high-octane adrenaline of a crime caper. It has been critically acclaimed (it has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 100%) and is currently making the round in local cinemas. To shed more light on the dark, mean streets of this urban jungle we thrive in, we’ve put together a list of flicks on the next page that have used Metro Manila as, if not a central character, but a background for shady dealings, death and despair, and hope amidst poverty and devastation.
Althea Vega plays the role of a GRO--the likes that some of you may have seen before.
