Trekkies are in for a big treat this year after it was announced that CBS will be releasing a new Star Trek series soon.

The new series is titled Star Trek: Discovery and is set ten years prior to the events surrounding the adventures of Captain Kirk and Spock aboard the USS Enterprise.

“The series will feature a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers,” CBS said in a statement.

The story will focus on First Officer Michael Burnham, a human who was raised by Vulcans. This is a departure from Star Trek’s tradition of having a captain as their main protagonist.

Other cast members include Jason Isaacs as Captain Lorca of the USS Discovery and Asian actress Michelle Yeoh, who plays Captain Georgiou of the USS Shenzhou.

The show, which is a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise, will be handled by executive producers Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman.

Star Trek: Discovery will have a 15-episode run for its first season in CBS and CBS All-Access this fall and will be presented by Netflix outside the US and Canada.
