FHM presents: The soundtrack to your upcoming beach trips, road trips, and trips to the fridge for a cold drink as you sweat your life away this summer!
It’s a fan-effin-tastic time to be a music fan this summer! A ton of awesome tracks have dropped in the past month—from rock to rap to EDM to OPM—and they’re here to serve as the soundtrack to your upcoming beach trips, road trips, and trips to the fridge for a cold drink as you sweat your life away in this weather.
Here, we’ve rounded up songs that are guaranteed to blow up this summer, songs by artists you probably don’t know but we think you should hear (that Tame Impala track is a killer, promise), and songs by local acts you should be checking out right about now.
Your Summer Walwalan 2015 playlist should have...
“BILLS” by LUNCHMONEY LEWIS
Since February when the song was released, American music websites and blogs have been calling Lunchmoney Lewis an artist to watch. And why wouldn’t they? Previously known only as a songwriter for the likes of Jessie J and a collaborator on Nicki Minaj’s track “Trini Dem Girls,” his first single as a solo artist—and its accompanying video—is an insanely infectious, Cee-Lo-esque romp that will make you feel fantastic even as it reminds you of all the goddamn bills you’ve yet to pay.
“OVERLOAD” by LIFE OF DILLON
UK trio Life of Dillon is another new act music pundits predict will blow up in the coming months. Their genre-defying first single fuses together cheery banjo, soulful singing, and a house beat to make a catchy, summer-perfect track. Put this on while you’re lounging poolside and resist the urge to at least bob your head, we dare you.
“STOLE THE SHOW” by KYGO feat. PARSON JAMES
The second single from the fast-rising Norwegian DJ-producer is another dancefloor smash waiting to happen. The tropical house star puts Parson James’s rich vocals on full display; sneaks in piano, flute, and cymbals; and hits you with a sexy, mid-tempo house beat for a totally chill, totally beach-ready vibe.
“LET IT HAPPEN” by TAME IMPALA
The new single off the Australian psych rockers’ upcoming third album sees the group going a more electronic route with almost eight minutes of warm, swirling, psychedelic goodness featuring a synth-laced, vocoder-aided interlude. Let it play while watching the world whiz past you on a long summer drive and feel totally rad, bro.
“KONTRABIDA” by ASSEMBLY GENERALS
The Filipino hip-hop supergroup made up of Raimund Marasigan of Eraserheads, Sandwich, and Pedicab; beatmaker and Team Manila co-founder Mon Punzalan, Flying Ipis’s Deng Garcia, and rapper Switchtrik thunders into your summer with this raw, aggressive first single off their self-titled debut album. “Kami ay kumokontra!”—the perfect war cry to shout this summer when it’s JUST. TOO. DAMN. HOT.
“KING KUNTA” by KENDRICK LAMAR
Kendrick returns with new album To Pimp a Butterfly—the follow-up to the critically acclaimed good kid, m.A.A.d city—and it looks like there’s no sophomore slump for this hip-hop star. The latest single off it is “King Kunta,” a funky, cocky, in-your-face number with a chorus lyric you’ll be spitting along to all summer.
“AMPSHADES ON FIRE” by MODEST MOUSE
From Modest Mouse’s long-overdue full-length Strangers to Ourselves, “Lampshades on Fire” fuses a funk feel with Isaac Brock’s rock-rap, making it a great addition to a playlist for that road trip with the boys. The single just got a surreal new video serving up a slew of surreal imagery, the least of which is a cameo by actress Natasha Lyonne (remember her?).
“PAY NO MIND” by MADEON feat. PASSION PIT
French producer Madeon teams up with American indietronica act Passion Pit for this new track off his debut album Adventure. The result is a gleefully danceable electro-pop concoction that’s a great choice to spin at a summer house party. The stunning video featuring a young man and woman exploring a futuristic world, one part of a concept trilogy, is worth checking out, too.
“SCENES AND YESTERDAYS” by PARANOID CITY
Video via Paranoid City
It’s easy to get swept up in local indie band Paranoid City’s energetic dance rock, and more so with their latest single. “Scenes and Yesterdays” is a sunny celebration of love, shamelessly unrestrained in its sappiness, with the chorus going “It feels like I'm in heaven / It feels like I am home.” Aww.
“GIVE ME A TRY” by THE WOMBATS
English band The Wombats’ latest single from upcoming new album Glitterbug will have you jumping up and down this summer with its giddy melody and heart-on-sleeve words. Be sure to watch the video, a hilarious depiction of people in online dating who just want that person checking out their profile to “give them a try.” Hits a little too close to home, eh? *swipes right*
