The Game of Thrones showrunners recently dropped the bomb after revealing that English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran will be a guest star for the upcoming seventh season of the hit series.

According to Entertainment Weekly, this was all revealed during the SXSW film festival where it was also explained that the main reason they decided to get Ed was because Maisie Williams who plays Arya Stark is a huge fan.

“For years we were trying to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie and this year we finally did it,” David Benioff said.

Ed for his part confirmed this somewhat through Twitter.

So who is he going to play? Everyone seems tight-lipped on this matter so your guess is as good as ours. But here are some possible roles that he could take on:

1) Rhaegar Targaryen

Word’s out that Prince Rhaegar Targaryen is actually the father of Jon Snow, also known as our favorite bastard.

If you think about it, it kind of makes sense if they want to portray Ed in an important but short scene since he is reportedly only playing a minor role. A flashback scene introducing us to Jon Snow’s parentage and possibly the secrets to his right to rule on the Iron Throne would be cool.

2) A Lannister

He doesn’t have those golden locks (something a wig can easily fix) but he does have the makings of a Lannister.

We can totally imagine Ed playing the role of a Lannister noble from one of the minor houses of the wealthiest Westeros family. Hopefully he turns good somehow or doesn’t get killed off too soon.

3) White walker

If the showrunners are planning on making Ed’s appearance as random as possible then playing the role of a low ranking White Walker for the Night King would definitely be a fitting choice. Just imagine him chasing then confronting Arya in a sword fight.

4) Random bard

We all know Ed became popular with his music. Now since Maisie is a fan maybe they will make him play out as a random bard guy who sings some Westerosi songs and charms all the ladies in that world as well.

Who knows, we might hear a Westerosi version of “Shape of You” from him or even a debut single during the show.

Game of Thrones Season 7 is set to premiere on July 16.
