They took their time but Nintendo finally joins the rest of us in high definition with their new console, the Wii U! Like its predecessor, the Wii U’s charm comes from its novel controller. As previously discussed, its has a touchscreen on it. Yes, a touch-freaking-screen!

It's not a totally new concept—anyone remember the Dreamcast VMU or the Playstation PocketStation? But the execution here is much improved, with touch capability and a screen that won't leave you with a bad case of pagka-duling. Now, we don’t actually have a Wii U yet but that won’t stop us from issuing our first impressions of this new machine.

1. HD!
It’s clear to see that HD is the way to go. Puns aside, we can’t wait to see what the devs at Nintendo can do with all the added resolution available. Remember the days when we had to plug an Expansion Pak into our Nintendo 64s to make our games look better? No? Are we that old?

2. No party like the first-party
Nintendo has always relied on a strong showing from its legendary roster of characters and games to push systems in their early days. We’re expecting the big guns to again justify buying a Wii U, so please give us a proper Metroid, Super Smash Brothers, Mario Party, Star Fox, F-Zero, Zelda in glorious HD!

3. Multiplatform releases are here, too
Looking at the rest of the game library on the Wii sometimes felt like sorting through hand-me-downs from your big bros rocking PS3s and 360s. With titles like Assassin’s Creed and Mass Effect being ported over to the Wii U though, it’s thankfully no longer the case.

4. Is it underpowered?
Rumors abound of developers unsatisfied with the graphical muscle of the Wii U. While it’s how you use that grunt that really matters, we’ll have to wait and see if this leads to some serious design compromise in the future. But it’s safe to say that the Wii U isn’t the going to be the visual king of the eighth-generation of consoles. We're not surprised, and we're really only a little bit concerned, because you can count on Nintendo to deliver fun in ways other than "ZOMG, GRAPHICS!"

Macho Mario and Macho Luigi sure as hell don't look underpowered here

5. The GamePad looks fun
We can imagine a hundred and one uses for the handheld screen/controller of the Wii U. Aside from ruining comsat attempts during multiplayer, we want to be able to use it augmented reality style. Imagine holding it up to your TV to zoom in with a sniper rifle, just like that Silent Scope game in the arcades!

NEXT: Ease of use, a concern?
