President Rodrigo Duterte showed his generous side after he handed an additional P2 million check to Olympic silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz on top of her initial P5 million incentive.

Duterte introduced Diaz during her courtesy call to the president in the Presidential Guest House in Davao City on Thursday night.

Katabi ko po ‘yung ating heroine sa Olympics sa Brazil. And siya ‘yung nanalo sa silver, weightlifting. She got the silver for the long time na wala tayong medalya sa Pilipinas,” said Digong.

“So really it came as a surprise, I was also watching her and I was really scared when she was struggling to pull the weights and she was able to do it. I almost shouted.”

According to GMA News, Diaz plans to spend the money setting up a gym in her hometown in Zamboanga City where she could teach weightlifting to aspiring athletes.

For his part, Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William Ramirez said the Duterte administration is planning on improving the overall support given by the government to Philippine athletes.
