A young Swedish man who was considered as relatively healthy, save for a mild asthma condition, died while undergoing a standard penile enlargement surgery.

According to the Journal of Forensic Sciences, the 30-year-old patient was admitted to a private plastic surgery clinic in Stockholm where the procedure took place.

He first underwent general anesthesia and was subjected to a liposuction procedure, where fat from his lower abdomen was transferred to his penis. Unfortunately, the patient went into cardiac arrest near the end of the operation.

He was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead following resuscitation efforts.

“This is the first described case where a seemingly simple and safe procedure of penis enlargement by autologous fat transfer caused sudden death in a healthy young man,” the study said.

The patient’s untimely death was mainly attributed to pulmonary fat embolism, where fat travels to the lungs through punctured veins during liposuction. This apparently resulted in low blood pressure and loss of oxygen that caused the cardiac arrest.

“Perhaps the risk of fat embolization is higher when pretraumatized tissue is subjected to fat injection, like in this case, where a penis elongation by loosening of a penile ligament was performed before the fat injection,” the study concluded.
