A 6-year-old girl is the latest casualty in the Duterte administration’s bloody war on drugs after she became collateral damage during a shootout between drug suspects and authorities this week.

The victim was identified as Stefie Kate Peñalber who was only playing in Barangay 199 in Tondo, Manila when a stray bullet hit her in the abdomen area, GMA News Online reports.

Stefie is currently in critical condition at the intensive care unit of the Manila Memorial Medical Center. Her family is still waiting for five blood bag donations before doctors could operate on her.

Aside from Stefie, a 35-year-old man was also injured during the encounter.

Station 7 of the Manila Police District already blamed the injuries of the victims on the drug suspects who they said fired at them first.

Siguro naman po, alam naman ng ating mga kapulisan yung paggamit ng firearm nila. So definitely sa mga suspect po nanggaling yon because nag-open fire while running po sa atin,” Senior Inspector Ness Vargas said.

Still, the Philippine National Police will conduct an investigation to determine whether their personnel was responsible for the casualties.

The residents, for their part, remain mum on the incident, but said the drug suspects were not part of their local community.

The Duterte administration’s war on drugs was recently relaunched in March after a short-lived hiatus and is linked to thousands of extrajudicial killing cases that has become rampant in the country.
