Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa has come to the defense of the police force who are gaining a bad reputation for their alleged involvement in extrajudicial killings.

During a senate hearing on Tuesday, August 23, the PNP chief defended his cops from critics from other sectors who believed they're responsible for the alleged rampant extrajudicial killings in the country, GMA News reported.

Bakit may ibang sektor na pinapalabas kami ay masama?" he lamented. "Yan po ang sama ng loob namin. Hindi kami mamamatay tayo. Kami ay mga pulis."

Dela Rosa said they were only doing their jobs as instructed by the president. “Hindi kami butcher na pinapatay ang mga tao na walang karason-rason."

Dela Rosa also said he felt hurt by some of the public’s comments that say the PNP are a bunch of murderers who abuse their power despite them trying to do their job well.

Kami ay binuwis namin ang aming buhay. Ang mga pulis ko nagkakakaso. Kami ay tao lang. Nagkakamali kami. Di kami perpekto. Sana naman po ang treatment sa amin iba-balance lang din po,” pleaded the police chief.

Meanwhile, Philstar noted that the number of killings involving suspected criminals have already reached 1,916 deaths.

These include 756 cases where policemen conducted anti-drug operations against suspects.

The PNP’s increased initiative against criminals is part of the Duterte administration’s war on drugs which aims to curb criminality in six months.
