President Rodrigo Duterte has declined the University of the Philippines’ plan to offer him an honorary degree as part of a longstanding tradition in recognition of the country’s head of states.

Duterte explained that it was simply not part of his personality to yearn for recognition, GMA News Online reports.

“With due respect sa University of the Philippines, I do not accept even if I was mayor. Hindi ako tumatanggap, as a matter of personal and official policy, I do not accept awards. Wala sa pagkatao ko,” he said.

Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte said the same thing earlier on behalf of his father, although he felt honored for UP even considering on giving his dad an award.

The statements came after public outcry over the plan as not everyone obviously seemed to like the idea with the UP Office of the Student Regent being among those who first opposed it.
