President Rodrigo Duterte sits atop this year's TIME Magazine’s most influential reader poll after getting five percent of the total votes.
The voting, which was concluded on Sunday, placed the President ahead of global influencers like Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, World’s richest man Bill Gates, Pope Francis, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Other popular names on the list are Chinese business tycoon Jack Ma, Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt, talk show host Oprah Winfrey, space entrepreneur Elon Musk, and award-winning author J.K. Rowling.
TIME noted that Duterte has consistently led the list since they started asking their readers last March 24 to vote for the individual who they think is a great influencer.
“Since taking office in June, Duterte has waged an aggressive war on drugs that has killed more than 8,000 people in the Phillippines, according to Reuters. The controversial anti-drug campaign has inspired growing opposition from human rights groups and some political leaders, including Philippine Vice President Leni Robredo,” TIME said in a statement.
The magazine will release its official TIME 100 list on April 20 after it is finalized by its editors based on this online poll and recent international events.
Former winners in the reader poll include Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2015 and US Senator Bernie Sanders in 2016.
This is not the first time Duterte got global recognition from a magazine. He was ranked last December by Forbes magazine as the 70th of 74 most powerful people in the world.
