Despite the differences and the animosity that has built up between their respective camps, the country's two highest officials were all smiles when they finally met Friday afternoon.

President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Leni Robredo were both present at the turnover ceremonies of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

The two, who hail from opposing political parties, were seen shaking hands and exchanging pleasantries prior to the event.

During his speech, Duterte acknowledged Robredo’s presence and even cracked a joke about their seating arrangement, GMA News reported.

“This is the first time that I meet you personally. I would have preferred to be seated beside you but nandiyan si Defense eh,” he said referring to outgoing acting AFP chief Glorioso Miranda.

Tension between the two leaders have risen over the past weeks after Duterte said he was not thinking of giving Robredo a Cabinet position.

He then met with her rival, defeated vice presidential candidate Bongbong Marcos, and admitted that they discussed possible Cabinet options for the former senator.

Meanwhile, Robredo’s camp said they were having a difficult time scheduling an appointment with Duterte.

On Thursday, the two held their inauguration ceremonies separately but both called for unity and healing, following a cutthroat campaign period.
