Filipino-American ONE heavyweight champion Brandon Vera has revealed that he has his sights set on a seat in the Philippine Senate after his possible retirement from mixed martial arts next year.

Vera said he was inspired by Senator Manny Pacquiao who banked on his highly successful boxing career to win in the May elections, GMA News reports.

"I'm just following Manny Pacquiao's lead. It's really nice watching Pacquiao in Senate hearings and listening to him speak because he's not scared to say whatever he feels like saying," he said.

Vera also said that if his plans to enter politics pushes through, he will try to realize his dream of improving the Philippine provinces.

"I would like to run for senator. I want to run for Senate in 2019. I want to help the people, I want to help the provinces. Nobody is looking into the provinces," he said.

Vera moved to the Philippines this year and acquired a dual citizenship after spending most of his early life in the United States.

His statement comes after his win last week where he defended his championship from challenger Hideki Sekine with an impressive first round knockout.
