Despite numerous incidents of random collapsing infrastructure inside the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), an airport official insisted that the notorious terminal could withstand the occurrence of a 7.6 magnitude earthquake.

Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) General Manager Jose Angel Honrado said he was reassured by engineers of NAIA’s quake worthiness, the Manila Bulletin reported.

Honrado was basing his pronouncement on the rehabilitation of Terminals 1 and 3 in the previous three years.

According to him, what is more important is that airport personnel are ready to respond to emergency situations in case an earthquake hits.

“Assessing the extent of human intervention that can be done to minimize risks is crucial to preparing for the ‘Big One’ aside from simply looking at the possible consequences of an earthquake,” he added.

Honrado’s statement comes after the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) conducted a simultaneous public shake drill in the metro and nearby provinces.

MIAA participated in the earthquake exercises by conducting its own evacuation drills.

The MMDA Shake Drill aims to raise public awareness on how to react during an earthquake.
