We may have had our share of sucky moments this 2014, but that doesn't mean the good days didn't come by. There were so many reasons for us to smile despite the many storms, scandals, and soul-sucking traffic we encountered in the past 12 months.

Below are the people and events that made the year awesome!

1)   Low Gas Prices

Oil prices have drastically plummeted, especially in the latter part of 2014. We know this miracle might have adverse effects on the global economy, but you sure won’t be hearing any complaints coming from us. Take advantage and keep guzzling the cheap gas while we still can!

2)   Lyca Gairanod

While nine-year-old Lyca Gairanod’s rags-to-riches story is definitely admirable, it was her rock star rendition of the Aegis hit “Basang Basa Sa Ulan” that really made her the first champion of The Voice Kids. Who would’ve thought that a pint-sized girl like her could have such a powerful voice?

3)   Kobe Paras

Benjie Paras’s 17-year-old kid, Kobe Paras, who plays basketball for Cathedral High School in Los Angeles, California, made us proud all over again after nabbing a spot with the UCLA Bruins, the same NCAA team that produced Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kevin Love, and Reggie Miller. Like father, like son!

4)   NU’s UAAP Showing

2014 will forever be known in history as the year NU showed the country that they’ve gone a long way from being the UAAP’s bottom-feeders. Their impressive wins in both basketball and cheerdance definitely made the country take notice of them and left the other schools quaking in their boots. We’ll see if they can sustain their winning streak in 2015!

5)   The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Dumping freezing water all over ourselves has never been cooler (pun intended) until 2014, when everyone worth knowing took on the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise money and promote awareness of the disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Philanthropy done right!

6)   Pacquiao’s Victories

His BIR woes, lackluster PBA showing, and dismal Congress attendance notwithstanding, Manny Pacquiao proved that he’s still a force to be reckoned with in the ring with his wins against Timothy Bradley and Chris Algieri this year. There are also talks about Floyd Mayweather agreeing to duke it out with the Pac-Man in 2015, which is really great news for boxing fans.

7)   Michael Christian Martinez

This ice skater made the country very proud by bearing the Philippine flag during the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Everyone stopped what they were doing to watch Michael’s impressive program every time it aired, and despite finishing at 19th place, the teen wonder was rewarded with a hero’s welcome when he returned to the Philippines. A fitting tribute for the first skater from Southeast Asia to qualify for the Olympics.

8)   Celebrity Weddings and Engagements

We admit: deep inside, we’re sad that Marian Rivera, Heart Evangelista, Solenn Heussaff, and a number of other celebs who featured prominently in our fantasies either got engaged or tied the knot this year. (Marian’s actually getting married in a few days!) But we can’t help but be happy for these lovely ladies who finally found their match, and we wish them all the best in their futures as MILFs of Manila.

9)   Share A Coke Campaign

For a few months in 2014, there were few things more awesome than getting a Coke bottle with your name on it. Judging by the lines and crowds the Share a Coke booths got, this softdrink brand really opened happiness for a truckload of people.

10)   Gilas Pilipinas’s FIBA World Cup run

Despite the addition of Brooklyn Nets import Andray Blatche into the team, Gilas Pilipinas still only won one out of its five games during the 2014 FIBA World Cup. On the bright side, our players showed the world that the Philippines has the potential to make waves in the international basketball community. #Puso!
