It's all over the internet: extremely graphic images of an Australian teenager's bloody feet have been making the rounds online due to its disturbing nature and the mystery surrounding the creature that caused it.

Apparently, 16-year-old Sam Kazinay just finished playing soccer with some friends and decided to cool his legs by taking a dip in Brighton's Dendy Street Beach over the weekend, CNN reports.

But Sam's 30-minute wade turned out to be an experience straight out of a horror film after his legs looked like this:

According to the teenager, he just brushed off what appeared to be some sand from his legs after emerging from the water. But Sam hurried back home when he realized that blood was continuously flowing from the pin-like wounds in his legs and feet. He was then rushed to the hospital after his parents failed to stop the bleeding.

Meanwhile, Museums Victoria marine biologist Genefor Walker-Smith later identified the little creatures that caused the injury as lysianassid amphipods, a type of scavenging crustacean.

"It's possible the amphipods contained an anti-coagulant, which would account for the inability to stop the flowing blood and that the very cold water may be the reason Sam didn't feel the bites."

The mysterious creatures were identified thanks to Sam's dad, Jarrod, who collected some samples of the little critters by baiting them with raw meat then trapping them with a net.

Fortunately, Sam's injuries aren't anything serious and he is expected to make a full recovery.
