Are your pick-up lines no longer working? You might want to try a new strategy. Introduce yourself to your potential date then tell her a good story. A new study found out that men who could spin a yarn are more attractive to the opposite sex.

The researchers came to this conclusion after running an experiment with 388 undergraduate students, 55 percent of whom were women, in the United States.

In the study, they asked the participants to rate the attractiveness of a potential partner based on a photograph and a description of their storytelling abilities. One such "review": "often tells really good stories...he makes the characters and settings come alive."

The results: good storytellers were rated higher by the women. The men with positive descriptions of their storytelling abilities were found to be more appealing and desirable as long-term partners than men who were only decent storytellers, or men whose bios didn't mention storytelling ability at all. The effect isn't the same for women. Men didn't consider storytelling an important factor on choosing a long-term partner.

Why does this happen? Melanie Green, one of the researchers of the study, has one theory: "Storytelling is linked to the ability to be a good provider [because a man is explaining what he can offer]." Meanwhile, licensed marriage and family therapist Anna Osborn told international news website Wall Street Journal in an interview that stories and conversations help build relationships.

"It's a way to build and maintain a bond over shared history," she said.

Bottom line: Ditch those cheesy pick-up lines and begin with "Once upon a time..."
